Nice to Milan via Ventimiglia

We have 4 days in Nice in Sep %26amp; then going onto Milan to Bellagio. We have a choice of 2 trains - a direct @ 10.02 or Nice-Ventimiglia-Milan @ 7.46. We are thinking of going the 7.46 as it gets into Milan earlier.

Is there a market in Ventimiglia on Fridays and would that cause a problem for us to catch the 7.46. There are 4 of us travelling together %26amp; when I look on train timetables (90 days advance from today) it doesn%26#39;t seem to give me seats on the first leg, but OK from Vent-Milan.

Appreciate any advice.

You can%26#39;t get seats on the Nice-Ventimiglia leg because it%26#39;s a local train with no seat reservations. Even if you buy a ticket in advance (which is pointless), you are not guaranteed a seat. Exactly the same system as a journey from Sydney to Gosford.

Don%26#39;t buy a ticket for the Ventimiglia-Milan leg from some agency such as RailEurope without checking out the actual ticket price at www.trenitalia.com . It is highly unlikely that you will be able to book through that site, as it hardly ever accepts cards issued outside Europe. Not a problem, just buy the tickets in Ventimiglia.

Hi Nick, I was thinking of buying thru the TGV-Europe site that I have bought our other tickets from. Would this be alright?

It doesn%26#39;t seem like I can get Prems so can%26#39;t print out myself but could pick them up while we were in Paris.

The change between trains at Ventimiglia is pretty tight so I thought it would be best to have pre ought.

Do you think that the markets on Fridays would make it really busy?

The tgv-europe site is run by SNCF, the French railway operator. If it will let you book a journey in Italy, go to. You won%26#39;t get PREMS, as Trenitalia does not offer these fares.

As you are travelling early in the morning, the market might make the Nice-Ventimiglia trains busy but you can%26#39;t book seats on those trains anyway. It will not have any effect on trains leaving Ventimiglia then, as people will not yet be leaving the market.

Thanks Sydneynick - your knowledge is invaluable.

If your change at Ventimiglia is tight, get an earlier train from Nice to Ventimiglia. These trains do not always run to time, and it would be a shame to have to wait around several hours because you have missed your departure by 5 minutes.

Is 23 minutes classed as a tight transfer? I%26#39;m not sure how big or busy the station is.

The Ventimiglia station is kind of small, so it is very fast to go from one dock to another.
