Need some tips on renting a car in France.

I%26#39;m spending some time in Bayeux and plan to travel south to Tours. All train tickets available regardless of dates require 2 Stops from Bayeux to Tours so arriving late at night. With layovers and stops the trip is 8hrs, but by car its 3hrs.

Any advance on renting a car in france. I will need one to tour Normandie, but it appears that I will also need it to drive to Tours since the Train schedule is to slow.

Check out www.autoeurope.com which is a consolidator that arranges cheap rentals with the major companies like Europcar, Hertz, etc.

What else do you need to know?

I can vouch for AutoEurope. Call their toll-free number in the states and they will set you up (our car ended up coming through Avis). We rented a car through them in Dijon and everything was set up so well--ie.e., there was actually a car waiting, and we dropped it off afterwards by leaving the paperwork at the train station since the office was closed. The people are so nice and helpful. I%26#39;ve signed up with them again for a future trip.

We did a one-day rental with Avis and it worked well. It wasn%26#39;t as expensive as I thought it would be and some other places would not rent for less than 3 days.

We rented at the St. Pierre des Corps train station right next to Tours. You say the train schedule is slow to Tours - I%26#39;m assuming you mean from somewhere besides Paris. The TGV ride was one hour to St. Pierre des Corps - with a 10 minute shuttle availabe into Tours. We enjoyed the TGV ride very much.
