"Residents" looking for Restaurants

Bonjour tout le monde,

Every year we visit the Dordogne (and the Lot regions) which we regard as one of the most special corners of Europe (not just France). Each time we arrive we are confronted by many %26quot;tourist restaurants%26quot; - some better than others. Now that we are relatively new members of TA, we thought we should draw on its wealth of knowledge provided by other members.

Could all those who not only live and visit here but who have some depth of knowledge regarding the charming, inventive restaurants and inns with restaurants - the ones that appeal to those that appreciate the good things in life (not just necessarily the most expensive!)- PLEASE RESPOND TO OUR REQUEST FOR PLACES TO SPEND OUR SPECIAL HOURS AT LUNCH AND DINNERTIME. These places may be in the beautiful towns that pepper the countryside our in the countryside itself - as we are totally mobile. Sincere thanks in advance to all of you!

P.S. We have attempted to search the TA website but are finding it most confusing in terms of locating more than a smattering of restaurants in the area and reviews.

Whenever we are in les eyzies we eat at au Vieux Moulin at the Moulin de la Beaune - In the summer the porch dining room looks our over a small river - food has always been excellwnt - We haven%26#39;t stayed there - we usually stay at Du Centenaire (not sure if their restaurant has reopened)across the street from the side of du Centiaire is a Pizza/bistro family place where I had the best duck confit I have ever had -still rmember how good it was - inexpensive not at all fancy -but good food

There is good food on offer in the evenings at Hostellerie Les Griffons in Bourdeilles. It%26#39;s a good hotel with a serious restaurant.

|||

I haven%26#39;t been there for two years, but I%26#39;ve always enjoyed (and have eaten several times at) the Hotel l%26#39;Esplanade in Domme. The food was really yummy (and a bargain compared to a comparable meal in a big city), and the view out over the valley from the terrace and the dining room is spectacular. It%26#39;s also a funky/fun oldfashioned hotel to stay at for a night, so you don%26#39;t have to worry too much about having a bottle of wine, plus a little after dinner digestif.

|||

Les Griffons also does lunch, at least on weekends if not during the week, and is full of French people which is a good recommendation.

The other place we ate really well was in the village of Les Arques at La Recreation, written about so nicely in the book %26quot;From here you can%26#39;t see Paris%26quot; by Michael Sanders.

Hi there,

Just a note to thank those who have already responded to my request:

a.to jannetteharriet - went onto Vieux Moulin%26#39;s website - looks exactly like the kind of place we are going to really enjoy!

b.sydneynick - love this region just north of our stamping grounds - will certainly make an effort to get back here and have lunch at Les Griffons.

c.berkeleytravelers - thanks for your response - we have never been to this hotel but %26quot;know%26quot; it very well.

d.lynnb48 - you hit the nail on the head with your suggestion - not only did you recommend a place that half the region has visited - we haven%26#39;t even heard of it - this shows how ignorant we are about a region that we really cling to!!! Your link to the wordpress article that we enjoyed also lead us to the %26quot;holiday in dordogne%26quot; blog on which we left our same request - see how successful this will be. (we also found reference to La Recre in TA - last mention in 2008 so I put my feelers out on this as well).

thanks again to you all - can%26#39;t wait for others to jump in.Best regards.

Excuse me janeharriet - we have a very good friend by the name of jannette!!

Hi there Lynn,

Just rushing out to a meeting - will be late - but had to quickly respond to your last note. Went onto your blog - it is a bit of a masterpiece - really salivated over your meal in Les Arques and in St Cirq Lapopie. Thanks so much - even read your Jules Verne paragraph - talk about living the high life!!

Will go into the restaurant websites when I have a moment this evening.

Sincere regards for now.
