We are travelling from Littlehampton to France and trying to decide whether we stay in Paris and take day trips to Normandy and Versailles or if it is better to first stay in Normandy then rail to Paris and day trip to Versailles from there. We are flying to the state following the 6 day trip. Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations on how to do this at the best cost?

As your actual starting point is Littlehampton rather than London, I suggest that you take a ferry to Normandy - Newhaven to Dieppe or from Portsmouth to Le Havre, Caen or Cherbourg. The choice would depend on where in Normandy you want to be - if you are thinking about the D-Day beaches then Caen would be easiest. If you take the evernight sailing you will be able to make an early start in the morning. See www.brittanyferries.co.uk.
You could then get a train to Paris.
