Le Camargue

Is it possible to see the Camargue by foot? I know there are 4 x 4 tours and horseback riding but I rather not do either. Do you have to be on a tour to see the park area?

No

La Camargue is a large area, not really a park in the Central park sense, rather a park like the Everglades national park.

Your remaining options are:

1. boat tour (I recommend one of the 4 which departs from Aigues Mortes):

2. rent a car and drive through it.

3. a bike rental from Sts. Maries de la Mer

Thank you for this. It is actually funny that you reference Central Park. I am experiencing a lot of city kid in the country while planning this trip. I asked on a previous post about the lighting on roads at night :)

We really love the Camargue and have been here for about a month (I am writing this from my beach apartment).

However, one downfall of the area in summer months can be the mosquitoes. The more time you spend here you%26#39;ll find that products containing DEET become increasingly valuable.

Do not pass up the opportunity to see one of the local bull fights. Here this is a team sport, the competition is to pull as many tags as possible. The team with the most tags wins.

The tags are located at the base of the bull%26#39;s horns. It%26#39;s really great fun to watch.

Another highlight is the Ornithological Park just outside of Sts. Maries de la Mer:

This is a must see location even if you think bird watching is a pass time better left to others. Here you are able to get as close as you possible can to the area%26#39;s flamingo population. They are illusive creatures bus fascinating to watch none the less.

I am jealous that your office is your beach apartment in the South of France. We are coming in late September, so hopefully the bugs will not bother us. Is the Ornithological Park different from where the horses and bulls are? I am consulting my Fodor%26#39;s Provence %26amp; the French Rivera as I write this and they do not specify in the Camargue.
