What is the best way to get to Corsica?

We are planning a trip to Nice in early spring 2010, and would like to stay in Corsica for about four days. Is it better to get there by ferry or by plane? We plan on arriving in Ajaccio, and using that as our base. Any tips would be appreciated. I have heard that the water is rough and traveling by ferry could lead to seasickness.

Thank you!

The ferries to Corsica are absolutely gigantic -some of them take 1400 people plus cars- and I should not have thought the Med got rough enough to trouble them, though I have not used them. The little ferry from Sardinia does get atrociously rough - I know that from experience, but that is completely different.

One point to consider is that Corsica may be cold and wet in early spring, certainly any time before Easter. Perhaps the majority of hotels and restaurants don%26#39;t open until April or May (even if they say they do). There will be places open in Ajaccio, undoubtedly, but I imagine it will be extremely quiet.

Thank you for your help! Had no idea that the ferries are so large. We will be going there in April - want to avoid crowds, and prefer cooler weather. I appreciate the tip about the ferry to Sardinia - thought that might be fun to do for a day. Doe anyone have thoughts about flying to Corsica from Nice?

Thank you.

Flying from Corsica to Nice and vice versa is quick and straightforward, but not cheap.

Problems can occasionally arise, at Calvi airport at least but probably less so in Ajaccio I would imagine, if there is a high wind, when flights may be cancelled - but in conditions this extreme the ferries are not much fun either, and can also be cancelled or delayed.

Boats are fine, but they take a lot longer, especially to Ajaccio, and can be a bit boring (speaking from personal recent experience, having done it twice in as many months). If you only have 4 days and are not too bothered about money I would save time and fly.

Thanks for you suggestions.

Do you think that Ajaccio is a good base for sightseeing? Since it is a larger city, with frequent flights from Nice, do you think that is a good decision?

As others here have said, Corsica%26#39;s main attractions are its scenery and countryside rather than its cities. However, Ajaccio has tourist attractions (Napoleon, beach) and many day trips are possible eg on the train up into the high mountains eg Vizzavona or Corte; and by bus to Piana and the Calanches.

But I don%26#39;t know Ajaccio well, others may be able to give more info.

Thank you everyone for your tips!
