Hotel suggestion for 1st time visitors?

My husband and I are planning our first trip to Paris and we have no idea where to stay! I have read about the 20 arrondisements in Paris, but I%26#39;m not sure what neighborhood would be best for first-timers. I%26#39;m leaning toward anything in the city center (by the Louvre), but I%26#39;m also wondering about the area around the Tour Eiffel and the Quartier Latin. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would also appreciate specific hotel suggestions if anyone has one. Merci beaucoup!

We just got back from 10 days in Paris, our 7th trip and 3rd stay at the Millesime Hotel. We usually look around before going back but the location is perfect for us, on the rue Jacob a few blocks from the Blvd St. Germain to one side and the river on the other. But the deciding factor is the tete-a-tete package.

We have them pick us up at the airport which is really convenient and part of the deal, and then we use the metro tickets to go up to Montmartre twice in one day, once to explore and once again that night to have dinner. There are also tickets for a Seine river cruise and vouchers for two drinks at the Club Laurant, the sister hotel. This is where we have our absinthe for the trip. And their breakfast is very good.

I figure this package saves at least 100.00 euros.

A few days before we left we asked them to book us a van to take us back to the airport. They said since we had booked an extended stay, they had us driven back for free. If you stay here, we left cards with the concierge for a bunch of restaurants that we particularly enjoyed.

For starters, you can look at the Hotel Valadon.... great reviews and currently rated #10 here on Trip Advisor..... it is in the 7th; Rue Cler is the next street over. Good location near the Eiffel Tower, Hotel Invalides, etc... And there is Othello...!

tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187147-d270870…

and check out their website....

and the map under the %26quot;Hotel%26quot; tab...

Everyone has their favorites... you didn%26#39;t mention a budget, which would help. I like the 7th, but with the great public transport, anywhere in the city center would be fine....

|||

I forgot about mentioning a budget...We are trying to stay under 200 euros per night. I%26#39;m not sure if that will work or not! Thanks for all the great advice so far! I appreciate it!

The Hotel Valadon would work... also, please let us know how long you%26#39;re staying, and what time of year....

I can recommend two nice hotels that we have stayed at. We paid a little over 200 euros for them, but if you check the websites, they may have special rates.

One is in the 1st arrondissement, near the Louvre and Tuileries Gardens. It%26#39;s located on Rue St. Honore, a wonderful shopping street (window shopping in my case), and you can walk to many sights. It%26#39;s the Hotel Royal St. Honore:

The other is located right on the border of the Latin Quarter and St. Germain des Pres, very close to the Seine. It%26#39;s a wonderful little boutique hotel with large rooms, beautifully furnished. It%26#39;s in a lively part of town with many cafes, shops, creperies etc. and also within easy walking distance of many, many sights. It%26#39;s called Villa d%26#39;Estrees

Have a fun trip.

First timers should go, without a doubt, to the Citadines Saint Germain des Prés. You feel as though you are in the real, magical Paris. Everything is within walking distance. Just down the street adjacent (Rue Dauphine), hundreds of small boutiques and cafés, and the area lights up at night time (Rue de Buci). The staff is great. A small kitchen doesn%26#39;t sound necessary. But it%26#39;s nice to go to a market and have plates to serve up the fresh fraises du bois (small strawberries) and other local specialties. I%26#39;ve stayed here almost 10 times. Never a single complaint nor regret.

Je vous souhaite un bon voyage!

I%26#39;m already in love with the Hotel Valadon and the Hotel Millesime! Thank you for these great suggestions. I%26#39;m kind of new to the forums here--I forgot to mention when we%26#39;re traveling. We will be going in June 2010 and staying for around 5-6 nights.

I really appreciate everyone%26#39;s kind help!

Nearly everyone on this site will help you find the best of Paris at the best prices. Beeks helped us tremendously on our trip to Normandy last April/May. The Valadon is great and very well located. However, this trip we booked one in the 6th, a 2-star but should be a 3 star, Grand Hotel des Balcons for 110 Euro/night. Valadon is in the 7th closer to the Eiffel Tower and Musee d%26#39;Orsay. Balcons is closer to Notre Dame and St Germain area. Any hotel in these areas are wonderful.

We stay at one of two Best Westerns behind the Madeleine for about 136 euro a night. The price depends on the day of the week, our bill has fluctuated from 99 euro to 136 euro in the same stay. If you call the U.S. 800 number, it includes breakfast and taxes. We stay at the Folkestsone Opera or Sydney Opera. It is near a metro, shopping, walking to Rivoli, Louvre, D%26#39;Orsay.

I am planning a day trip (or overnight trip) from Paris to Normandy for November. I would love input and suggestions! My brother-in-law want to rent a car, but . . .

What did you do?

Thanks!
