A nice town in South-West France?

My wife and I are staying in France for a month (all of August). We have a week spare and have always wanted to visit the south-west of France. Can anyone recommend a really nice town to stay in? (Preferably on the train line as we wont have a car.) We stayed in Beaune in Burgundy a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the size of the town, its beauty and it had plenty of services - cafes, markets, shops, walks etc etc. Is there anywhere you could recommend in s-w France that wont be totally overrun by tourists? Or any recommendations elsewhere for an ideal week?

Not sure that it is SW France, but it is in Languedoc; think about Sete.

It is big enough to maintain your interest, small enough to walk around, is on the main rail line and is on the coast. It has good seafood, an excellent %26quot;les halles%26quot; and sand beaches on the Western side.

Other places to consider : Narbonne, Grau de Roi, Perpignan, all of which have sncf stations.

I don%26#39;t know how big Beaune is, but the places that spring to my mind are Albi and Castres - both are beautiful and have plenty to keep your interest, both in the towns themselves and their surrounding areas.

Going further East, Lodeve is in a great location for exploring and for walks. The town itself is no beauty - although it%26#39;s position on the banks of two rivers means that there are some pretty parts - but it has plenty of bars and restaurants, the scenery is great and it is near enough to visit the coast, Montpellier, the grandes causses and the Millau bridge and many other places.
