No Hotel Reservation?- October

My wife and I will be in the Alsace wine country area in October for a few nights (mid week). We%26#39;re planning to be in the area around Colmar. While I%26#39;m usually a %26quot;reservations in advance%26quot; traveler, I%26#39;m debating whether just to come to the area, drive through a few towns and find a hotel in a town that strikes our fancy. Obviously, I will have done some hotel research in advance. Given that it%26#39;s mid-week in October, I don%26#39;t have any worry about not finding a room. My concern is price and having to pay more because I don%26#39;t have a reservation. When you %26quot;walk in%26quot; to a hotel in that area, are prices the same as posted on the website? Could they be less through some negotiation? Also, I don%26#39;t speak any French other than a few courtesy words. Thanks for any advice!

Hotels are not allowed to hike prices in France, so they work the other way: the posted prices are the maximum they are allowed to charge (usually applied during the summer, for a trade show or event,...). If low season you will get the price that is judged acceptable. If you can have an idea from the website what rates apply all the better. In France, negotiating doesn%26#39;t work very well, as far as I know!Verify your dates as Alsace does Oktober Fest quite a bit too so hotels may be a bit more busy if iy is during that period.

If you%26#39;re looking at staying in chain places such as IBIS then you won%26#39;t get a better rate by negotiating.

If it%26#39;s a family run place and you try to negotiate they%26#39;ll look at you a bit funny for the rest of your stay. Your best bet is to take the price and then %26quot;confirm%26quot; to them that it includes breakfast or some other extra you fancy, so you may get your discount by the back door.

No, it is not done as far as hotels and restaurants are concerned.

The answer you may get is %26quot;we are not carpet dealers%26quot; marchand de tapis.
