I have not visited any small champagne houses, but I loved the Veuve Cliquot tour.

Will you be visiting the Aube or Champagne? Both are champagne producing areas. In the Aube visit the three villages by Les Riceys. Perhaps the best there is Champagen Bauser in Les Riceys. The owner hosts a very good visit and at the end of it, the four couples, three of them Belgians and ourselves, had a comprehensive degustation session, sampling his seven wines which included two rose wines. We bought several bottles and a couple of half bottles for picnics. His website is www.champagne-bauser.com
If you are in Champagne go to the tourist information office in Reims and collect a brochure on the Champagne trails. Drive around them and in every village there is normally at least a couple open for visits and degustation. Our favourite is the village of Verzenay, one of the 17 villages which produce Grand Cru champagne. For some very good Grand Cru champagnes, try Michel Henriet, at 12 rue de Paradis in Verzenay. They do a very good cuvee tradition, Blanc et Blanc and Chardonnay. Naturally a degustation is part of the buying process. We have been buying our champagne there for many years and friends in England compliment us on the Michel Henriet champagnes. Well worth the detour.

I always buy my champagne from the Morize champagne house in Les Riceys in the Aube region. Try and have a tour of their cellars if possible, they date from the 12th century. Their champagne is excellent and a much better price than the big houses in Reims and they also produce an outstanding regional wine called Rose de Riceys. Their website is http://www.champagnemorize.fr/
