Has anyone been to Brest?

We are travelling to Brest for a short break on Ryanair in a few weeks time - any recommendations or feedback would be welcome.

Hello,

Went to Brest a couple of years ago. Its a typical French working town set high on hills overlooking the harbor. The water front which is below the high cliffs is mostly working commercial fishing boats though there are some good restaurants....well a few.

To be honest we did not explore the town too much but it seemed to be fairly busy, had all the normal town activities and not particularily appealing to us (we were using public transportation and are not keen on hills when walking). We were more interested in beachfront areas (trying to escape the heat of Paris).

We did not find Brest what we wanted so we went on along the southern coast to great towns some with interesting history and some with beautiful beaches and more summer vacannes orientated. Quimper is a lovely historical town and on farther is Quiberon with a wonderful wide beach, nice promenade, good hotels (cheap), great food and what looked like outstanding camping right on the water. (It is a ways from Brest though.)

If you are going fairly soon, the towns may not be in full swing yet since they are big tourists and vacations areas. Personally I like them more quiet and we found them just fine in early June.

Hello there.

My family is from brest, i would recommand oceanopolis one of the biggest fishtank in the world. Would be god if it is raining.

On the saturday in saint-renan (10mins) there is one of the best street market in finistere.

You could go to la pointe saint mathieu to visit the old abbaye, go down to Le conquet and jump on the boat to ouessant on the ireland rent some bike and go around for the day.

I would say that you need a car, brest was destroyed at 80% during the war it is not the prettiest town in brittany but around it is fantastic

enjoy

Hi there! I just read that your family are from Brest so I presume you know a good bit about the area and you might be able to help me? I got really cheap flights with Ryan Air and I%26#39;ve heard great things about the food/beer in Brest - but we also want to do active things like kayaking, snorkelling, scuba, hiking etc Is it possible to do this stuff while based in Brest or would it be better to stay somewhere else like Quimper? Would you recommend getting a car or are there lots of day trips we could book on to? Any advice at all would be great - thanks a mill!

I had a day in Brest last Friday.Let%26#39;s just ask did you do your homework bearing in mind your active interests? The aquarium is a major attraction but you need to head out east to Brittany to get the activities you are interested in.Brest is so unappealing.1970s architecture for civic buildings Hotel de Ville etc which probably looked good then but now it is just concrete lumps.

Maybe that is why Ryanair flights to Brest are so cheap. My advice would be exchange your flights to La Rochelle. That is a French resort worth spending time in.I wouldn%26#39;t return to Brest for free.

Well, I have contacted the local tourist twice by email and both have been ignored. I am arriving in Brest on a €5 flight and then travelling on to Quimper. Unfortunately both the train and bus that leave Brest to Quimper go at the same as each other with a two hour gap before the next departure. I would have thought that someone might have staggered the departure times!

We haf vays of making you stay in Brest!

I meant to write %26quot;tourist office%26quot; but maybe there is only one tourist in Brest?

Hi,

You might like to walk down to the lovely park which overlooks the sea in your lay over. Its quite impressive and you could do it easily from the train station or bus terminal if you will be leaving from the one down by the water.

We took a trip out to Brest, found it not where we wanted to stay and took buses and trains on down the coast ending in Quiberon. Conconeau is a great town on the water if you might be interested.....not mich farther than Quiper.
