AS Limoges does not appear to have enough to keep our interest for 3 days in December is there a form of public transport that would getus to Lyon which seem livelier. Is there a Christmas market?

It is definitively not the same area (west and east are not easily connected in France, you always have to transit through Paris), and Limoges is one of the worst connected place...so it is not an easy trip...
There are no direct trains to get to Lyon: you would have to get to Paris first (arriving at Austerlitz train station) and then take a TGV to Lyon at Gare de Lyon. That makes a 6 hours and a half trip, that is prohibitive. There is an Air France flight (one early in the morning, one in the afternoon), but unfortunately no low cost company operates that trip.
If I may give a piece of advice : don%26#39;t come to Lyon only for the Christmas market; there are Christmas markets all over France now, nothing genuine actually as it is a german/alsacian tradition. I suggest you consider Bordeaux instead, as there are direct trains.

Thank you for this information and I will have a look at Bordeaux now.
