I have posted here several times and have received excellent advice. We will be spending 10 days in Switzerland and then coming to the Alsace region. We are spending two nights in Basel. From there we are renting a car and driving to Urbes (family history). We will return the car to Basel. I was able to find a one day rental for an automatic on the Swiss side. The minimal rental on the French side was three days.
We will leave Basel on a Wednesday. We depart from Zurich the following Monday. My current plan is to spend Wed, Thurs, Fri nights in Colmar. Can we explore areas around Colmar by using public transportation? I know we could take a trip into Strasbourg. We really do not want to rent a car.
Thank you.

You can get around by public transport, although really exploring the Route du vin is a bit difficult as it%26#39;s based around lots of small villages.
This question came up recently and there%26#39;s a couple of links here to see bus and train times.

The villages of Eguisheim and Kaysersberg are very close to Colmar and well worth a visit. Strasbourg is easily accessible by train, as is Selestat. Bus times to places outside of Colmar can be found at

It is also possible to get to Freiburg, across the river in Germany, although a slightly longer journey than it looks like it should be on a map. Here%26#39;s the timetable.
