Hello! I%26#39;m considering booking a hotel in the 12th, near Place de la Nation, and would greatly appreciate any comments regarding the area - restaurants, patisseries, general information. Thanks in advance!

Well, lots of people live there, so there is going to be all those businesses you seek. No point offering specifics until you know what your address will be.
You can look up a prospective address using the Google maps, change to %26#39;Street View%26#39; and walk around the area a bit.
You can learn to use PagesJaunes.fr, enter your address, check the %26#39;a cote de%26#39; box, and search for %26#39;boulangerie%26#39; or %26#39;supermarche%26#39; etc. that is near that address.

I wouldn%26#39;t stay near Nation as a tourist / visitor. This area is a little out of the way of the core part of the city though you can take a metro (a lot) to the center of the city. I%26#39;m sure there are patisseries, etc. but I%26#39;ve never eaten dinner out that way.

Thanks, Travelnutty and Elzevir, for the replies.
I do realize that the 12th is not very central, but I think it would also be interesting to stay in a place that%26#39;s not so touristy.
I find the hotels within the 1st and 9th arrondissements a bit too expensive. Outside of those nine, what do people think would be a good choice?

The 12th around place de la Nation is an upper middle-class neighborhood, quaint, safe and handy. I know most people on this forum claim that they walk everywhere (well, when you see the weight of most American tourists in Paris, and the difficulty with which they move around, we must really really get the fittest of the fittest on this board, but whatever... ), but just in case one wants to take public tranportation from time to time, there are 4 métro lines and one RER line in Nation. Line 1 is super frequent (about one train a minute or two) and gets you to le Marais (Saint-Paul) in 4 stops, ie about 7 mn). Granted, there are not two million things to visit around (aprt from the Picpus cemetery where La Fayette is buried, along with most of the guillotined nobility during the Revolution).

Rendezvous,, why do you even come on this board. I have twice read really snotty comments about what you think of the posters here, or now,in this case your remark about American tourists and their size.
And how do you know all overweight tourists who speak english are American,, YOU DON%26quot;T ,, as there are overweight tourists from many english speaking countries, and horrors or horrors,, FAT FRENCH people too!! And I know this for a FACT as MY FRENCH family had quite a few tubbys in it.. so get over yourself .
BonoGirl,, what exactly is your budget? I found a place for 75 euros,, but there are even cheaper places in more central areas if you book well enough in advance.
If you are really not interested in the more central areas,, which is no big deal,, you could look at the 14th,, I stayed on Raspail boulevard last year ,, near border of 5th, and meters away from Vavin metro which I though was a great line into the heart of Paris( line 4 I think). I liked the area,, but the hotel I stayed at was not really that cheap..

- read those reviews and see how people %26#39;cope%26#39; with being a little %26#39;out%26#39; of the center

Thanks again for the repies and the info.
I had been considering the Hotel Lux Picpus, mostly due to the favourable reviews.
I would really prefer not to shell out more than 70 euros for a double (yes, I know this considerably limits my options), so don%26#39;t mind staying somewhere not so central if it means saving my money for sightseeing and other activities.
What drew me to the 12th was the hotel options as well as its relative proximity to the 4th and 5th. I don%26#39;t think we would be touring the arrondissement extensively, but it would be nice to be in an area that has an interesting character, so I was hoping to get a sense of people%26#39;s impressions of the 12th.

Well, I haven%26#39;t slept in the 12th but we came up the Nation metro stop to shop for some stuff, went into a couple grocery stores around there. We%26#39;ve been to the Place d%26#39;Aligre flea market twice, and a short bit of the Viaduc des Arts walk... Been out to Bois de Vincennes, the chateau, Parc Floral.. Going to see the Bercy area this September. So I have a very general feel for the area, and it would be fine to stay in, since you already understand it isn%26#39;t much %26#39;walking distance%26#39; that everyone so loves.

Not sure if you might be interested in an apartment, but we stayed at the Aboukir 4 studio with Centreparis last month:
www.centreparis.com
It was located in the 2nd arrondissement which we loved - not overly touristy, but within easy walking distance to many sights. It was only 60 euros per night, and it was close to rue Montorgueil which is a great market street with many cafes, bakeries, etc.
Although we were only there for a long weekend, we only used the RER to get to and from CDG. We were able to walk to the Louvre, the Marais, the Opera, St. Chapelle, the Latin Quarter, etc. and didn%26#39;t require the metro.
So, it%26#39;s still possible to get inexpensive accommodation without having to venture from the centre of Paris. If you would like any further info about the apartment, let me know and I%26#39;ll give you a link to my review of it.
