I don%26#39;t know where you live. However, here in southern Califronia we have Trader Joes%26#39;s, Beve Mo, and World Market so I have not felt the need to bring home wine from Paris. The wines are very good there and even the inexpensive bottles purchased in grocery stores have been great. There are many wine stores in Paris. Nicolas is a wine store with locations throughout the city. The first one we ventured into was on Rue Cler. The manager there spoke English and was very nice. He helped us to select some nice wines which we enjoyed during our stay.

Personally I love the Bordeauxs.

An %26quot;average price%26quot; is difficult to give - prices start at under €2 for a bottle, to hundreds of euro%26#39;s for the really expensive stuff. I understand that the average price paid in supermarkets is around €5.

I%26#39;m not sure it is a good idea to bring wine with you on an airplane - you can%26#39;t take it with you in your hand luggage, so you%26#39;ll have to put it in your suitcase, and hope it doesn%26#39;t break. Think of the damage to your clothes if it does...

We travel to France fairly often, and we always bring back a few bottles in our checked luggage. I pack bubble wrap and those big zippered plastic bags to pack it in. We also love the Bordeauxs and especially liked to find wines that are not exported to the U.S.

On our most recent trip last week, we visited Lavinia, the huge wine shop in Paris. They were offering tastings of a very nice rose champagne that day, and bottles cost 68 Euros. We preferred red wine, though, and Lavinia has very knowledgeable employees to help you make a selection. Tell them what you like and how much you want to spend, and they will offer suggestions. They even packed up our purhcase for us, so I didn%26#39;t even need my bubble wrap and bags (although I did end up using them to wrap up apple preserves I bought in Normandy).

I also buy wine at home at places like Trader Joe%26#39;s and Total Wine -- Total Wine has great selections of French wines and great prices -- but it i still fun to bring back wine from France as a great memory of your travels.

If you want to bring home something that is a little hard to find in the US, look for a nice Languedoc. We usually look in the several stores along the rue Moufftard where we%26#39;ve gotten a better value than in the bigger chain wine stores. 15 - 30 euros for a decent, special occassion, bottle.

But if you find yourself in the 11th, go to Melac, a wine bar...http://www.melac.fr/

He sells his own label for 10 euros and it%26#39;s very good. You can try a glass right there.
