We are staying in Antibes in early September and then taking the train to Aix.
Which is the most scenic route, the TGV (obviously quicker) or the route via Marseilles?
Is it best to book seats in the UK or wait?

Between Antibes and Marseille the TGV uses the same track as the local trains and therefore does not take much, if any longer. The high speed line starts between Marseille St Charles and Aix TGV stations.
There is now quite a good service of local trains between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, at least one each hour and a journey which takes rather over half an hour. Once out of the Marselle sprawl it is a pleasant journey.
Bearing in mind that the local train will get you into the centre of Aix (if that is where you want to be) whereas you would have to get a transfer from Aix TGV into town, I would opt for changing at Marseille. Whether you need book seats for the first park of the journey depends on when you are travelling - if on a Friday afternoon or a Saturday, it might be a good idea.

The tgv to aix is over an hour to an hour and a half quicker =- even the sncf website gives the journey time Antibes to Aix centre via AixTGV station as 2h40mins which includes the coach time to the centre
The trains to Aix centre via marseille take 3h30 on average
To find the times for the navette passing AixTgv station go here
www.lepilote.com/transports/ChoixLigne.asp…
choose the first in the list for the navette -the navettes are very regular, around every 10 mins - and take about 15 mins to get to aix bus station
There are also other buses which go from Aix tgv station to Aix centre
The other option is just to take the train to marseille and then the same shuttle from the marseille station as it might be the cheaper option -worth checking on anyway.
