Drive from Swizerland to Provence

How long will it take to drive from Switzerland (Geneva) to Provence? Is there anyone had tried? How%26#39;s the road condition?

The price to rent a car in Geneva is around 1/3 as rent the same car in Lyon.

Geneva is some 380 km from Avignon, and the trip would take some 4 hours of driving, plus any stops. You can get driving directions and rather optimistic times from www.viamichelin.com

If you hire a car in Switzerland and drop off in France, there will be a relocation fee of several hundred euros.

I%26#39;d say it all depends on where in Provence you are planning to go...

If it is Avignon you are heading to, as said in the previous post it will take approximately 4 hours driving mainly on French motorways (good condition).

If you are planning to go to Marseille, the drive will be longer (450km - 5 hours on the same motorway as above passing through Savoie, Lyon, Grenoble etc.).

Now if it%26#39;s Nice you would like to visit, it%26#39;s a completely different itinerary through the Mont-Blanc tunnel and Italy (541km - 5h45 quickest route).

You can also check this site for itineraries and estimated driving times :

If you are intending to hire at Geneva and drop off the car in France, hire a French car from the French side of the airport (Geneva airport has exits and car hire in both France and Switzerland, though the French side is much less used).

Agreed, we ski every year in Verbier then end our trip in Manosque. We definitely rent on the French side of Geneva airport and drop off in Marseille on our return leg and depending on the company there is no drop off fee. We usually use National/Citer.

Thanks!

I probably need to drive the reserve way. I decided to rent a car at Pairs for a week and drive to Provence and then go to Swizterland and drop the car in Geneva.

From National Car%26#39;s website, it I rent for a week (pick up at Pairs and drop off at Geneva) there is no %26quot;drop off%26quot; cost. But if rent for 4 days or drop off at Zurich, it will have Euro 200 %26quot;drop off%26quot; cost.

However, I am really confused with insurance of different car rental company. The liability insurance is not show on National car%26#39;s website. What I need is Car Demage Waiver + Addtional Liability Insurance, the cost information is not available online.

Are you visiting Paris or is this just where you are arriving from Beijing I suppose? If you are not planning to visit Paris either fly to Marseille or Nice or take the TGV bullet train and rent the car from there. You will have more time for visiting, less fatigue. It might be a bit more expensive but really woth the extra money. If you travel on AirFrance Beijing to Paris or Beijing to Marseille is the same price.

|||

I plan to visit Paris for 3-4 days. I%26#39;ve never been there. So Paris is one of my destinations but not stopover.

|||

The same holds true for the continuing ticket on AirFrance to the south, even if you stop over for a few days in Paris.

You definitely do not need a car in Paris.

If you are not flying with AirFrance you can either:

- Take the TGV from gare de Lyon to the south of France: Paris-Avignon is 2h40 ride instead of a 7 hour drive. Price can be around 100€/person

- Easyjet.com about 60€/per person Paris to Nice and 40€/person Nice to Geneva. For Easyjet, the sooner you book, the cheaper it is.

|||

One more thing about Easyjet, look at their extra luggage fees, it can get expensive if you have too many pieces.

Thanks!

Can you take a train to Lyon and rent a car there, then:

Lyon - Orange - Avignon - Nime - Arles - Aix en Provence - Marseille - Toulon - Freijus - Cannes - Antibes - Nice - Monaco - Monte Carlo - Eze - Menton - Geneve or Lyon (depends on the %26quot;drop off%26quot; charge)

It is weird if I rent a car in Paris and drop off at Geneva a week later then there is no %26quot;drop off%26quot; charge but if I rent a car in South France and drop off at Geneva a week later then I will need to pay Euro 200 for %26quot;drop off%26quot; at NationalCar.
