Help, I am confused. What is the difference between the RER and the metro. Aren%26#39;t both the subway. Also, i have tried to use the interactive map in reference to getting to my hotel, Crowne Plaza Champ Elysees but they give me 2 different methods of getting there. How am i suppose to know which mode of transportation to take. All help will be much appreciated.

Put simply, the metro has small trains, does not go far out of central Paris, and is run by the Paris transport authority, RATP. The RER has larger trains, runs far out into the suburbs, and is run by the French national railway, SNCF. Within central Paris, they form in integrated system.
If you forget about the interactive map, and just look at a map of the metro, you will see that there are at least three ways of getting from Gare du Nord to Charles de Gaulle Etoile.
1. RER B or D south to Chatalet-Les Halles, changing there to RER A for Charles de Gaulle Etoile.
2. Metro Line 4 towards Porte d%26#39;Orleans to Chatalet, changing there to metro Line 1 towards La Defense, getting off at Charles de Gaulle Etoile.
3. Follow the signs for a longish walk to Metro Line 2 at La Chappelle station. Take a train in the direction of Porte Dauphine and get off at Charles de Gaulle Etoile.
The first two will involve quite a walk at Chatalet, the third has a walk at Gare du Nord.
