Paris to Arles - Train or Rent Car?

We are spending a couple days in Paris then making the trip to Arles as a home base in Provence. We are renting a car but not sure if it would be better to rent in Paris and drive to Arles or take the train to Arles and rent a car there. Any advice?

Unless you have a great deal of time, take the train to Avignon and rent a car there. You can always drive back to Paris but driving both directions is time consuming.

Great advice! That%26#39;s what I%26#39;ll book today. Thank you.

If you do drive one way make a little time for a stop off in the Burgundy region - my second favorite area in France with some farytale Chateau Hotels.

What did you do as we are going from Paris to Arles. What towns were great and how long is it by car and did you take the train?

Any help much appreciated.

The drive on www.mappy.fr is 7h40 in optimal conditions, which in the summer on week-ends can take much longer. Getting out of Paris/Ile de France will add approximately 1 hour to that anyways.

So the train is preferable in most cases. Paris-Avignon or Paris-Aix-en-Provence.

Hi Cookie,

We ended up taking the train in both directions. We planned to drive from Arles to Paris but then the nice lady at De Arltan Hotel found very cheap return tickets for less than $100 per person. We didn%26#39;t really want to spend ~9hrs in the car and the train is very fast.

Have a great time!

If you drive, going through Burgundy will give you plenty of nice scenic views. Pass through Auxerre, Beaune, Dijon, Lyon, Valence to Avignon and make some stops along the way. Three to four days depending on your pace.
